Setup: Seth and Jared have been best friends since childhood. Seth, gay, has always been more than a little hung up on Jared, who is straight and can’t return his love to the extent he wishes. The friendship continues and is something they both depend on. Jared, who works as a driver for a overnight delivery service, has been dating Sarah, a hospital-based pediatrician, for a year. Sarah has just hosted a small dinner for their mutual friends. Now, with Sarah in another part of the apartment, Seth and Jared are cleaning the dishes.

INT. SARAH'S APARTMENT - KITCHEN - NIGHT
Seth is on auto-pilot, drying dishes as he watches Jared washing the last of them.
Jared is speaking but Seth has slipped into that odd place of not quite listening to what his friend is saying. The words have become a fog while Seth's eyes have become focused on Jared's body. Jared's hands. His lips. His forearms. His shoulders. The swell of his chest.
Suddenly Jared is looking right into Seth's eyes and the words cut through the fog.
JARED
Marry me.
SETH
Excuse me?
JARED
You were on another planet again, weren't you?
SETH
Uranus, actually.
Jared dries his hands on a towel and flicks the towel at Seth.
JARED
What am I gonna do with you?
SETH
Pretty much anything you want.
JARED
Be serious.
The look on Seth's face tells us he is serious, but he shakes it off.
SETH
So what did you say?
JARED
Well, if it wasn't important enough to listen to the first time--
SETH
I zoned, shoot me. What?
JARED
What would you say if I said I was going to ask Sarah to marry me?
Seth looks like he's had the wind knocked out of him.
SETH
What would you say if I said I loved you?
JARED
Seriously.
SETH
Seriously.
JARED
(doesn't get it)
I've got the ring right here.
Jared goes for his pocket.
SETH
Don't.
JARED
Don't what?
SETH
Don't -- get the ring out. It's bad luck for the best man to see the ring before the wedding.
JARED
What makes you think you're the best man?
SETH
You don't know any better men than me.
JARED
This is true.
So?
SETH
You're not marrying me, don't show it to me. She's the lucky bride - that is, assuming you're going to let her in on it.
JARED
You both matter a lot to me.
SETH
I want you to be happy. Does she make you happy?
JARED
Yeah. You think she'll say no?
SETH
Why the heck would she say no?
JARED
For starters, she heals children for a living. I deliver boxes.
SETH
So you're saying she's a snob?
JARED
No.
SETH
So you're saying you're a snob?
JARED
No.
SETH
Then what's the problem?
JARED
I've never had this problem -- this feeling before. Before her.
SETH
Hence, the ring.
JARED
No, I mean -- before Sarah, whenever I was with other --
SETH
Women --
JARED
I always felt like I was enough. I don't feel like I'm enough for her.
Seth reaches over and places a hand on the back of Jared's head, then quickly adjusts, moving it down to a more acceptable place on his neck or shoulder.
SETH
(means this)
Anyone'd be a fool not to take you if they had a shot at having you.
JARED
Shit, maybe I'll just ask you.
They look at one another, bemused.
SETH
Why couldn't you be gay?
JARED
Why couldn't you be a woman?
