The light on DAD, sitting up in bed, rises and expands as he calls out to DAVID.

DAD

Forgive me. Youll have to remind me again. Are you married?

DAVID

No, Dad. Still single.

DAD

Are you seeing anybody?

DAVID

Not at present.

DAD

You should be getting out more.

DAVID

I think that to myself all the time.

DAD

Life gets busy.

DAVID

Yes, it does.

DAD

But finding a good woman is one of those things that makes life worth living.

DAVID

Or a good man.

DAD

Well, yes, if youre a woman, finding a good man.

DAVID

Dad.

DAD

Yes?

DAVID

Im gay.

DAD

Oh.
Thats right.
I forgot. Im sorry.

DAVID

No need to be sorry.

DAD

But it must get old having to remind me all the time.

DAVID

Its the first time its happened.

DAD

Really?

DAVID

Really.

DAD

OK then.
Did I take it well?

DAVID

What?

DAD

Your coming out. The first time.

DAVID

Yes, actually. You took it remarkably well.

DAD

Why are you smiling?

DAVID

I was more upset than you were.

DAD

That a fact?

DAVID

I had worked myself up so much worrying about telling you that I ended up being upset that you werent more upset about it. Like it was this big deal for me but for you it was a non-event.

DAD

Im glad. Not that you were upset, but that I didnt make a fuss.

DAVID

You said you were my dad, and you wanted me to be happy, and if this was who I was then it wasnt going to change, and it was best that you just get on with accepting it.

DAD

Have you ever had a boyfriend, man friend "

DAVID

Thats OK, we still havent come up with a good word for it yet.

DAD

Lover just seems to reduce it to sex and I know its not that.

DAVID

Maybe Ill come up with a word.

DAD

If you do, write it down. Then you can use it as a kind of flashcard if I ever ask you about women again.

DAVID

Deal.

DAD

I did pretty well though.

DAVID

Very well. Id come out to you any day of the week.

DAD

You may have to.

DAVID

Good point.

DAD

So, have you, ever had anyone - ?

DAVID

Not that rose to the level of bringing him home to meet the folks. No.

DAD

Thats too bad.

DAVID

I thought so, too.

DAD

Youre a good man. You shouldnt be alone.

DAVID

Thanks.

DAD

I dont know what Id do if I didnt have your mother.

Pause.

DAVID

Yeah.
