Currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Matthew holds a
Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale
School of Drama.
Matthew is the recipient of a Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding
Writing for the Theater ("Heaven
and Home"), and a three-time recipient of support from
the Minnesota
State Arts Board - a 2007 Artist Initiative Grant (for "Love's
Prick"), a 2002 Career Opportunity Grant (for "The
Hopes and Fears of All The Years"), and a 1999 Theater
Arts Fellowship (for "Leave
[The Surface of the World]").
Excerpts from "Heaven and Home," "Studpuppy,"
and "Leave (The Surface of the World)" have been published
in Smith and Kraus' "Audition Arsenal - 101 Monologues
by Type, 2 Minutes and Under" - the volumes for Women in
their 20s, Men in their 20s, and Women in their 30s - and Greenwood-Hienemann's
"The Playwrights' Center's Monologues for Men."
New works have been commissioned by Allegheny
College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and California
State University, Fullerton.
Matthew’s current plays include, “Heaven and Home,“

Snow,” “Leave (The Surface of the World),”
and the Christmas musical “The Hopes and Fears of All the
Years.”
His screenplays include “Make
Me” and “Heaven and Home.”
He and his stage plays have been finalists for the O’Neill Theater Center National Playwrights’ Conference, the Heideman Award at the Actors Theater of Louisville, the Playwrights’ Center’s Jerome Fellowship, and a nominee for Best Production of the Year by GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).
His screenplays have been finalists for the Independent Feature Project (IFP)-North/ McKnight Foundation Screenwriting Fellowship Competition, Outfest Screenwriting Competition, Morrow Screenwriting Fellowship and a $25,000 grant from the Minnesota Independent Film Fund.
His scripts have been seen on stages throughout Minneapolis
with Thirst Theater, Theatre Unbound, the Early Stage, Outward
Spiral Theatre Company, Pillsbury House Theater, the Original
Theater Company, Bedlam Theater, Independent Feature Project
(IFP-North), Ebullient Theater, Powderhorn Writers Festival,
Emigrant Theater, the Center for Independent Artists, and the
Minnesota Fringe Festival. His work has also been produced in
Los Angeles, California, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania.

Matthew is the host of the local television show "Cue
To Cue: A Conversation About Theater In The Twin Cities,"
which brings local performers and theater companies into the
TV studio to present samples of their work and speak about their
artistic missions. "Cue To Cue" is regularly seen
both on SPNN, the St. Paul Neighborhood Network (Channel 19),
and TPT-17, St. Paul's public TV station serving the Greater
Twin Cities viewing area. He is also a popular blogger annually
as a roving reporter/reviewer about the Minnesota
Fringe Festival. The Fringe coverage is archived on this site, and posted regularly at http://swfringegeek.blogspot.com/. Matthew ran the weekly new play reading series, the Roundtable,
for The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis for four years.
He also served for two years on the Theater Arts panel for the
Minnesota State Arts Board.
Matthew is a current member of the Dramatists
Guild.
He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana
State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. Of his eleven
earlier short works written at ISU, eight received productions
and eight won awards in writing competitions.
